Working Trails

Working Trials is one of the many training disciplines offered by CHDC. The discipline requires time, dedication, commitment and a love of the great outdoors. Working Trials is made up of three different components and is a KUSA scheduled dogsport.

 

Our training takes place in the summer months at Cape Handlers, moving to various farms for tracking etc in the winter months. Our goal is to train each team, dog and handler, to compete in Working Trials shows.

What Working Trails entail

Criteria:

  • Your dog should have a solid recall, stay and Basic Obedience. 

  • Agility: This section comprises three obstacles – high jump, long jump and A-frame. The three elements are trained taking into account the dog’s age and experience. 

  • Obedience: Having achieved a level of competition obedience is an advantage, but not a necessity. Heelwork, retrieve, recall, down stay and send away all make up this section of Working Trials. 

  • Nosework: This section consists of an area search and tracking. The search involves finding an article/s in a marked off area. The track, one of the most rewarding exercises, takes time and patience. Dogs of any age can be taught to track; however, some breeds are more suited to this than others.
